It's a story you have to walk through.

When I first began learning about the underground homes of the Chagga people, I found myself asking the same question over and over again.

How could a people who adapted so brilliantly to their environment—building underground homes, protecting families, preserving food, caring for livestock, and creating thriving communities beneath the earth—remain largely unknown outside this mountain?
The more I learned, the more I understood.

Long before modern engineering and architecture found their way here, the Chagga people had already learned how to live with the mountain instead of against it.

I don't believe the best way to challenge assumptions is with an argument.
I think it's with an experience.

‘People often ask me why I built Eekanubi.’
The answer is simple.
Because some stories are too important to disappear.
I wanted to help preserve a remarkable chapter of Tanzanian history.
I wanted visitors from around the world to discover another side of Africa.
And perhaps most importantly, I wanted young Tanzanians to grow up knowing that the history beneath their feet is something to be proud of.
Not because someone told them it was.
Because they've experienced it for themselves.
