Some places are known for what they have become.

Along this stretch of the Indian Ocean, old Swahili streets, carved wooden doors, weathered buildings and centuries-old ruins tell stories of a town that once connected Africa to the wider world.

When I first began exploring Bagamoyo, I realised that its history wasn't confined to museums or monuments. It was everywhere.
In the architecture. In the art. In the people. In the stories that have survived generations.

There are places you visit to see history.
And then there are places where you can actually walk through it.
Bagamoyo is one of them.
Once an important trading port on the East African coast, the town became a crossroads for traders, travellers, missionaries and colonial powers. Its streets witnessed both cultural exchange and some of the darkest chapters of our history, including the slave trade.
Today, those histories remain visible in its old buildings, historic sites and archaeological ruins.
But I think the most interesting thing about Bagamoyo is that its story hasn't ended.
Walk through the old town and you'll find yourself moving between centuries.
A weathered building catches your attention. A carved doorway makes you stop. An artist's work introduces you to a completely different perspective.
Every corner seems to offer another reason to look a little closer.
And the longer you stay, the more you begin to appreciate the layers that make Bagamoyo what it is.

I have always believed that art gives us a way of seeing the world beyond what is immediately in front of us.
In Bagamoyo, that belief comes alive.

At the Bagamoyo College of Arts and in the local art community, creativity is more than a tourist attraction. It is a living practice.

❋ THE ART OF SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLYHistoric
BEFORE BAGAMOYO, THERE WAS KAOLE.A short journey from the town takes you to Kaole, where the remains of an earlier coastal settlement offer another window into East Africa's history.
Here, coral-stone ruins, ancient mosques, tombs and remnants of an old settlement tell a story that stretches back centuries.
Walk among the ruins and imagine the people who once lived, worshipped and traded here.
Look closely at the craftsmanship.
Notice how the buildings were constructed using the materials available to their builders.
Beyond the ruins, mangroves and the nearby coastline offer a different perspective on the landscape that supported these early communities.
Kaole is a reminder that Bagamoyo's story began long before its prominence as a nineteenth-century trading port.
And that there is still so much to discover beneath the surface of what we think we know.

When you visit Bagamoyo, I hope you come with curiosity.
